Candy-Apocalypse

By Alli Avery
Sophomore in Strategic Communications and Media Production
Aurora, CO

In CMDP 1400, we had to create a project that told a story through pictures. This was the final picture. It was essentially just the fact that I imagined candy taking over the world. It was super fun to create and I liked the outcome!

The Buff

By Evan Stephens
Sophomore in Media Production
Cedarburg, WI

This image was taken on the overlook on I-70 of a buffalo. I wanted to make it a fine arts piece rather than just a picture of a buffalo so I made it look like it was in a studio when it was taken.

Dark Room Stories

By Katie Lavey
Senior in Advertising and Media Production
Highlands Ranch, CO

For this work the subjects sat in the dark and told a 30 second story to the camera, which was set on long exposure. Each person’s movement blurred differently an in the photos you see the way people physically express storytelling uniquely. The title is a snippet from the story to set the tone.

Roller Rink

Ace Attorney fanart depicting an alternate universe where two characters meet and flirt at a skating rink!

Fast & Fresh

By Sean Bowen
Junior in Strategic Communications
Mahwah, NJ

My photograph was taken in a town near where I grew up. The words fast and fresh capture the lifestyle that is part of living on the east coast, near NYC. Life is fast because people are busy, and the liveliness of living by the city makes the days fly by. Fresh can be applied to various aspects of living near NYC, from fashion to food. The blurry van adds an element to the photograph that I was not expecting, it was captured in the photograph by accident.

Topographic Land Cut Embroidery

By Tyler Kemp
Junior in Geography and Environmental Biology
Lafayette, CO

As a geography major specializing in GIS, I spend a lot of time working with data about the surface of our earth and all the unique and beautiful features it contains. This piece was created to replicate an image from a data set used in one of my labs showing the location of snowmelt drainage into an underground cave. In this piece, I wanted to highlight how often the line between science and art is blurred especially in the field of cartography.

I can’t really paint but I figured our house need a hall of portraits.

the last day i saw you

By Lo Hartman
Freshman in Media Studies
Missoula, MT

This collection of images were taken on the last day of 2020’s ‘normality,’ though, at the time, I had not realized this was the case. “You” has a multitude of meanings, one meaning the end of a friendship of 4 years, and the other being the last day of my senior year of high school. The tone of this collection, both cold and dark, reflects the bleak nature of this time, which only prefaced what was to come in the year ahead for many people. When creating this, I was grieving many things, but for some reason, the images reminded me that even though chaos can often feel like it will last an eternity, there is simplicity and certainty to be found in one’s individual experience. Looking back on this project now, when I am not engulfed in chaos, I understand how important it is to create things that help you make sense of your experience and find clarity and health. Although these images may hold little significance to the average person, they are a record of my mindset from many months ago and a symbol of change, which has only recently become far more hopeful and compassionate for the world.

Man or Mother

By Charly Taylor
Senior in Media Production
Burbank, CA

The series I took is constructed of double-exposed images of the same model juxtaposed with images of nature and manmade materials. There are 18 double-exposures all together made up of 9 pictures. The pictures find the same model in a reflection-like state of the same pose. One of the pictures finds her enveloped by nature, while the other she’s enveloped by man-made structures or materials. The goal of this piece is to display the ways in which we are a result of the environments that surround us, and in an effort to make audiences embrace their surroundings.

Gone by Head and the Heart.

By Amberlynn Blankenship
Senior in Environmental Design/Architecture
Arlington, WA

This is the song that inspired me to add media production as my minor during my freshman year. I have always wanted to create music videos that I day dream about and this was my first attempt. The song is about a breakup. I used some special effects and what I had learned in previous classes to convey the meaning of the song in a unique and personal way. There will be another rendition in the future!

Observed

By Logan Jacobs
Sophomore in Media Production

“Observed” is my first narrative short film. In the modern era, we are always being monitored and regulated. But what if this overseeing eye isn’t just good ol big brother? In this suspenseful short film, a young woman fears for her life when a little bit of bad luck, and modern day technology ends up in the wrong hands.

History Repeats Itself

By Avery VanDuine
Sophomore in Media Production
Bainbridge Island, WA

I used archived footage of historical moments in the United States with soundbites comparing the countries current status on similar issues. I found a lot of parallels between today and the past, highlighting how little progress we have made as a country in certain areas, thus showing how history has repeated itself overtime.

Strangely Complex

By Aidan Murphy
Sophomore in Film Production

A short, silent film, about the idea of how every single person has an equally complex life, and how the strangers we may see for only a few seconds, all have complex lives.

I created this work on the 4th of July in the year of 2020– a year of political turmoil. This collection of found footage is a representation of the America I am proud of–the America I wanted to celebrate and lift up on the 4th of July.

“Zooming Through the Election”

By Carlos Franco
Freshman in Media Production
Crested Butte, CO

A collection of images pieced together in addition with video from around campus. 2020 has been the longest but shortest year at the same time and I wanted to display how I felt about not only the election going by in a flash but also how quickly Covid has changed lifestyles, changed the places we live in today and been such a surprise to everybody.

This short film, which was created for my senior year film fest in May 2020, depicts a young woman as her suspicions about her roommate consume her life.

Voiceless

By Carl Tinsley
Sophomore in Film
Menlo Park, CA

This is my final project for a film class I am taking, the project was focused on camera work, editing, and sound design. The story and reasons for the events playing out are up to interpretation, maybe one day I’ll flesh out the entire story in a full length short film.

Awaken: A Letter to Self

By Connor Flynn
Junior in Media Production
Portola Valley, CA

For years I’ve been toying with the idea of creating a project that is entirely my own creation. As I wrote this song I could feel the visual element coming to life as the song did. I hope others can find inspiration and hope through this piece as I have in making it. Enjoy!

Voicemail 41

By Quan Le
Senior in Music Technology and Media
Littleton, CO

This is a soundscape that I created from an old voicemail from an ex-girlfriend. I made this with the hope of creating a relatable and vulnerable piece. I decided to make very minimal edits to help it remain authentic, and to capture the emotion behind it. There are certain timbres and frequencies that come from a phone microphone and speaker, which is something that I wanted to keep. I remember the moment I heard this voicemail, and I wanted to recreate the mood, and the environment. I remember the rainfall being so intense that I struggled to hear the voicemail through my phone speaker. My head was throbbing and my ears ringing, because I was listening to something that truly hurt to listen to. Even after I had finished listening to the voicemail, I had a sensation of emptiness and I was disoriented. I sat in the rain and took in my surroundings until I was finally ready to leave. One of the hardest parts about making this was having to listen to the voicemail over and over again. It really placed me back in time, but by the end I was happy that I was able to make something of it. Much like that relationship, I learned a lot from it and it will keep the experience in mind for the future. With all of these things in mind, my vision was for this to be in a movie or something in that context. A lot of inspiration came from The Social Network directed by David Fincher. I love the audio and soundtrack to that movie, and loved how you could feel tension, and have narrative cues from the audio alone.
