One CU student dies, another in critical condition in shooting off campus on Halloween
A 19-year-old CU Boulder student died after being shot at an off-campus gathering on Halloween night and another 19-year-old student was critically injured.
The Boulder Police Department said Sunday that they are still looking for the people who shot the students near 7th and Marine Streets in the University Hill neighborhood. The victims have not been identified.
Boulder police said officers had been to the home earlier in the evening due to a noise complaint, and shut down a large party. Neighbors reported hearing gunshots from inside the house roughly an hour after that.
“We were just getting ready to go to bed,” Ashtyn Turney said. “There was a huge party the cops had just shut down.”
Turney and her roommate, Joann Frank, live near the site of the shooting.
“The party had been shut down for a while,” Frank said. “There was just some residual groups of people.”
The police are searching for two persons of interest who were seen on a doorbell camera, according to the department’s post on X.
“This is an incredibly traumatic event for our campus community,” CU Boulder Chancellor Justin Schwartz said in a statement Sunday. “Our thoughts and sympathies are with all those impacted by this tragedy, especially those students, families, faculty and staff who have been directly impacted or experienced significant loss.”
Boulder police said Sunday in a news conference that the first calls about the shooting came in at 11:28 p.m. Saturday. The first officers arrived two minutes later, where they found two victims with gunshot wounds.
Both were taken to a hospital, where one of them died and the other is in critical condition.
“We are committed to finding those responsible for this heinous crime,” Boulder Police Chief Stephan Redfearn said at the news conference.
The department is asking people to bring forward photos and videos taken at or near the site, and also are requesting any information or identification regarding the two people of interest.
