Editor's Note

Dear Readers,

In honor of Women’s History Month, occurring since 1987 as an extension of the original “Women’s History Week” that began in 1982, this magazine edition highlights women–both past and present–who shape our lives today and our futures. 

“Celebrating Her” commemorates women who have impacted our communities, including: Katie Hnida, the first woman to score a point in a Division One college football game and an activist for women and sexual assault survivors; the queer women in Boulder who participated in the Equal Protection Coalition and fought for legal protection from discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation; Boulder City Council Member Junie Joseph, the first Black woman and Haitian American to serve on Boulder City Council; Stacey Smith, a biologist and professor at CU Boulder; the women authors who share diverse stories of women; Louisa Dunn, a textile artist who aims to shape new narratives and inspire other artists; and the women in our everyday lives who shape us. 

Our magazine cover features photos of women who worked behind the scenes to develop this magazine edition, the storytellers who aim to connect and to better the Boulder community. The women featured in the cover are: Lauren Irwin, an assistant editor; Abby Schirmacher, a staff writer; Hannah Prince, the newspaper editor-in-chief; Nikki Edwards, the operations manager; Britney Eschelman, a staff writer; Elizabeth Weiler, the arts and entertainment editor; and myself. Each of these women have greatly contributed to The Bold Magazine through their dedication to sharing important, useful stories with students and community members in Boulder. 

I also want to acknowledge that there are many inspirational women in the Boulder community who are not shown in this cover or who do not have a story in this magazine. Myself and the other students involved with The Bold are dedicated to diversifying the stories we share, as we believe storytelling offers a unique opportunity to understand and connect with others who we may not otherwise. We are also working inwardly to become an organization that is a diverse, inclusive space for all members to participate in, because diversity within our organization is just as important as diversity within the stories we share. 

I especially want to thank the writers for this magazine edition. These stories, while focused on women, are valuable for all readers, as they help expand our understanding of what it means to be a woman and the ways in which women have and continue to impact our lives. The dedication, creativity and passion of each of these writers transfers into their stories, sharing compelling narratives that I’ve gained a lot from. 

Recognizing the accomplishments of people and expressing gratitude for them is a practice that should not be confined to one particular month of the year; however, the celebration of Women’s History Month helps remind us to be cognizant of the progress we have made and the work that still remains. To celebrate her is to acknowledge her as an individual and not put limitations on who she is or who she can be. To the women who continue to show us the many ways we can inspire others and enact change—thank you. 

I hope you enjoy this magazine edition! It marks the first time we have changed our format of the magazine by creating an individual page for each story, with the aim of bettering the reader experience.
