What you need to know about the inauguration of Joe Biden

Overview:  

  • Joe Biden will become the 46th president of the United States. 
  • Kamala Harris will become the first woman, Black woman and Asian woman to be vice president.

 

Who will be attending: 

  • President Trump will not be in attendance, he will be at his residence in Mar-a-Lago in Florida, leaving the White House for the last time the morning of Jan. 20. 
  • Vice President Pence will be in attendance, as will former presidents Bush, Clinton and Obama.
  • There will only be about 1,000 guests in attendance.
    • Majority of whom will be members of Congress and their guests.
    • Unlike 2009, when over 1.8 million people attended President Obama’s inauguration.

 

What is different this year? 

  • No audience will be in attendance due to COVID-19 health and safety concerns. Over 200,000 flags have been placed on National Mall to represent the Americans that would have been there to celebrate.
  • For the first time in over 100 years, the outgoing president will not be in attendance.
  • There will be no public parade from the U.S. Capitol to the White House after rioters stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6 and due to COVID-19 precautions. There will be a virtual parade called “Parade Across America,” to take place instead. 
  • Up to 25,000 National Guard troops will be in place for security concerns. 
  • Kamala Harris is set to make history as the first female and person of color to be a Vice President.
