Changes are coming to the Buff Bus routes

By Rian Korb

Your bus ride is about to get an upgrade. Starting Oct. 1, the Marine Street Express will be replaced by a new on-demand bus route where students can request rides to eight different stops using a new app that is currently being developed. Riders will be able to choose where they want to be picked up or dropped off and also decide what time they want that ride.

Deborah Méndez-Wilson, a spokesperson for CU Boulder’s transportation services, says the changes are to improve the commute for students.

“Each year, we evaluate passenger riding trends and use of campus bus routes,” she explained. “If they are not working as intended, we may consider additional route changes.”

In addition to the Marine Street Express bus changes, the routes between the Williams Village residence halls and campus are also changing. Previously, the buses between Will Vill and campus made six stops. The new route consolidates Will Vill, Will Vill Limited and Bear Creek into one bus loop. That bus now stops at Imig Music, Muenzinger, Mathematics and Colorado and 30th Streets, removing the Engineering Center and C4C stops.

“I feel like having three stops on this little corner is too much,” said Stella Camara, a freshman psychology major. Camara lives in the Stearns Towers West building in Will Vill. She says the new bus route is too crowded and needs to be spread out across campus.

Méndez-Wilson says that drivers will be handing out cards with QR codes, allowing students to download the app before Buff Ride officially launches on Sept. 22.

Included in the available Buff Ride stops are the Regent Lot across from the engineering building and the C4C stops.

Francisco Cervantes, a sophomore majoring in business marketing and finance, has classes twice a week in the engineering building. He says that his walk is 23 minutes and that the app feels like more effort than needed.

“I think it would take around the same amount of time to get to those classes if that existed,” he said. “I don’t think it’s necessary.”

Dominick Aranda, a junior majoring in engineering, said he will definitely use the app as he heavily relies on the C4C and Engineering Center stops in order to get to class on time.

“I planned out my entire schedule based on the fact that I would take the Will Vill bus to the C4C stop,” he said.
