The King Soopers on Table Mesa Drive reopened today following a ceremony hosted by Kroger.

The ceremony, held at 9 a.m., worked to “remember the lives that will never be forgotten and embrace the strength and resilience of the community,” according to a news release by King Soopers president Joe Kelley.

The location has been closed since last March when a perpetrator shot and killed 10 people.

According to Kroger, the interior and exterior of the store has been redesigned and remodeled based on input from employees and area residents, although there has been no statement made on what suggestions were used in the redesign. The parking lot for the store has also undergone renovations.

King Soopers previously stated that an estimated 50% of its employees who worked at the store at the time of the shooting will return to the store.

“We’ve always known that Boulder was a special place, but you’ve proven through your empathy, your strength, help and support that Boulder is so much more than a place; it’s more than a community; Boulder is our family,” said Kelley in a statement published on the City of Boulder’s website on Dec. 2021. “We know that the building is just part of what makes this store so special and that restoring it is another step in the journey as we continue to rebuild and heal.”

The reopening, which was previously expected to take place on Jan. 20, was postponed due to a state-wide King Soopers worker strike. The 10-day strike was resolved with a new union contract.

King Soopers Spokesperson Jessica Trowbridge gave local media a tour of the remodled building on Tuesday, Feb. 8. There will be a remembrance garden revealed in June in the west corner of the parking lot.
