Amidst the Comeback That Almost Was, Freshman Receiver Omarion Miller Played the Game of His Dreams

BOULDER– The night before a historical seven-catch, 196-yard, one-touchdown performance against the then-No. 8 University of Southern California Trojans, Colorado Buffaloes’ freshman wideout Omarion Miller knew what his future had in store.

“I dreamed it in the hotel after the meeting,” Miller said after Wednesday’s morning practice, “Just dreaming of me making plays, me celebrating in the endzone. It all came true.”

But for everyone else, such a performance came as a surprise. Leading up to the game that earned Miller Pac-12 Freshman of the Week honors, Coach Prime said Miller “didn’t practice worth a darn.”

“I dropped a couple easy balls last week,” Miller said regarding Coach Prime’s comments, “He kind of got on me for that.”

In addition, the young receiver had only seen 11 snaps before facing USC.

Still, Miller knew he would thrive if given the opportunity.

“I was ready for that moment,” Miller said.

On first-and-10 with 7:14 left in the third quarter, that moment came.

Down 27 points, the Buffs subbed in Miller, who received offers from LSU and Nebraska before choosing Colorado. On his first target, the Louisiana product caught a short pass on a curl route, shaking off USC cornerback Domani Jackson as Miller ran down to the Trojans’ 10-yard line. A few plays later, CU running back Anthony Hankerson celebrated the first of four Buffs’ second half touchdowns.

The 65-yard catch and run was just the start of Miller’s unbelievable day.

On the following drive, the Trojans gave CU quarterback Shedeur Sanders and the Colorado offense a free play. As Sanders threw deep, looking for Miller, USC cornerback Jacobe Covington grabbed onto the freshman’s jersey. With penalty flags flying for defensive pass interference, Miller reached out with one arm, reeling in a spectacular 44-yard reception as he fell to the ground.

The freshman wideout was here. The Colorado offense was in full force.

From then on, the Buffaloes scored three unanswered touchdowns. The second came on a fourth-and-5 scramble by Sanders, finding a diving Miller for one of the most impressive touchdowns of the young college football season.

As Miller basked in the glory of his first collegiate touchdown amidst his record-breaking showing, teammates Jimmy Horn Jr. and Xavier Weaver celebrated.

“They been knowing I was capable of doing this,” Miller said about playing with fellow receivers Horn Jr. and Weaver. “They just telling me, ‘keep working, don’t let the outside noise get to you.’”

With Snoop Dogg ringing Miller’s phone as Miller sees himself on “every app he opens,” blocking out the noise will be a tall task. But the former four-star recruit knows what he does going forward is what matters.

“Like coach says, ‘It’s another thing when everyone expects you to do it,’” Miller said about keeping up his performance. “Now everyone expects me to do it.”

Heading into an away Pac-12 matchup against the unranked Arizona State University Sun Devils this Saturday, Miller looks to continue his heroic play. With ASU having dropped four straight games, now sitting at 10th in the Pac-12, Miller has quite the opportunity to do so as the Buffs look to end their two-game skid.
