With spring football on the horizon, Deion Sanders and his stellar squad are coming
CU’s new head football coach Deion Sanders hosted a press conference on Wednesday, National Signing Day, to officially report on the new additions to the CU roster. Overall, this new class of high school recruits and transfers is ranked No. 21 in the nation by 247 Sports, which is the highest rank that the school has seen in 15 years.
The team appears to be quite impressive. Of the 42 new Buffaloes, there are two five-star recruits and seven four-star recruits. They come from all over the world, 16 different states and two foreign countries. That marks a record for a Buffs recruiting class, as the most states previously was 13, in 1973.
Sanders has amassed quite an impressive staff around him as well. All 10 position coaches were hand-selected by Coach Prime, and an additional five analysts as well. In just 10 days in January, the staff visited over 150 high schools in 19 states. The team has been dedicated to bringing all of the best players to Colorado.
The new class is certainly very strong. How has Coach Prime been so successful at recruiting players to a team that only won a single game this past season?
Sanders said that the staff has “a commitment to excellence, and it’s working.” Clearly, it is. The team has mastered recruitment of athletes who are looking for a place where they can be the best.
Coach Prime gave credit to his recruitment staff, to the custodians who keep the facilities pristine, and to the food services team that offers delicious meals for recruits and their families. When a potential recruit visits CU, Sanders is able to relate with them in a way that most people can’t.
“I’ve been in all three seats,” he said. “I’ve been the player getting recruited, I’ve been the parent of the player who is getting recruited, and now I’m the coach who’s doing the recruiting.”
He preaches to potential players and their families how his team will strive to be absolutely excellent, not just in football but in life. He stresses that his players learn how to become the best men that they can be. They come to earn their degrees and do well in school, and hopefully strive to play football professionally.
“We’re not here for the NIL, we’re here for the NFL,” he said.
Overall, his team is strong, talented, and ready to head into spring football. Practice will start on March 19, with the much-anticipated intrasquad matchup set for April 22. On that day, CU will host Black and Gold Day, which will feature many activities along with the spring football game. Tickets will be $10, but free for students who use the ticket claim process.
“We’re coming,” Sanders preached frequently. “We’re coming and we’re serious about that.”
