CUSG Legislative Council moves forward with rank-choice voting; initiative announced for neurodivergent and mentally disabled students
CU Student Government (CUSG) Legislative Council met Thursday, Oct. 20 to discuss rank-choice voting in the upcoming student government elections, as well as an announcement by the Inclusive Rec about an initiative for students with disabilities.
CU Boulder’s upcoming student government election will now be conducted via rank-choice voting, following the announcement at Thursday’s council meeting. With the new voting system implemented for the upcoming CUSG election, voters will be able to select as many candidates as they would like and rank them via preferential order. Previously, voters were only allowed to select as many candidates as they would like without the ability to rank them by preference.
Additionally, an initiative to support students with neurodivergence, mental disabilities, and mental illness was announced to the council by Jason Wilson, representative of CU Inclusive Rec, during the public open hearing portion of the meeting. The program provides accessible recreational opportunities for students. The initiative mimics the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower campaign in the UK, which provides yellow lanyards for students with hidden disabilities or hindrances. The lanyard functions to notify surrounding people of the person’s hidden disability so that they can maintain more patience and understanding with the individual. Wilson hopes to distribute these lanyards to students at the Recreation Center.
“I think it’s important to allow our disabled student body who may not be visibly disabled to have a form of accommodation without having to ask for it,” Wilson said.
