Boulder Theater: Suzanne Vega’s last night on tour

New York folk singer-songwriter Suzanne Vega ends her tour with a homage to Ukraine in Boulder Theater

Straight from New York City and with only one guitarist accompanying her, Suzanne Vega and Gerry Leonard ended their nation-wide tour at the Boulder Theater.

“An Intimate Evening of Songs and Stories with Suzanne Vega” hosted by Z2 Entertainment was an astonishing sold out show in Boulder on Oct. 7, 2022.

The “Luka” and “Tom’s Diner” singer-songwriter gave an astonishing show to an admiring audience, telling various stories behind her music and performing 19 songs, one of which was a cover of Lou Reed’s “Walk on the Wild Side.”

During her last show, Vega also performed a new song which she claims has been in the works during the tour, and in her own words, “slowly bringing it on stage.” The song is called “Last Train from Mariupol,” a homage to Ukraine.

“This is a song, metaphorically, about the situation going on… in the entire nation of Ukraine,” said Vega.

Vega and Leonard gave a captivating performance from beginning to end, leaving the audience dazzled.

“It made me feel like I was in a little New York City nightclub,” said Diana Stone from New York, who attended the show as a long-time fan of Vega. “I love that all these people brought their kids, it made me so happy that they’re exposing them to it.”

The audience was a multigenerational assortment of different backgrounds, united by their reverence for folk music idol Suzanne Vega.“I thought it was cool that she was so edgy,” said John Bogosian, another member of the audience. “Even at her age, she managed to be edgy in a way that wasn’t contrived.”

Her setlist ranged from top hits such as “Tom’s Diner” and “Gypsy” to newer songs like “I Never Wear White.”

“Her voice is unchanged,” said Stone. “It felt like an intimate little thing. I’ve seen her a long time ago in small clubs, and she is just so special.”
