CU Student Government (CUSG) met Thursday for their weekly Legislative Council meetings. The Council met to discuss multiple items on the agenda, most prominently the ratification of Emma Holt as Sustainability Chair for the Executive Branch.
Holt met with the Appointments Committee of the Council on Aug 29 for the first rounds of interview where concerns regarding her appointment were allegedly raised by committee members.
Holt allegedly referred to developing nations as “third world” in her interview while speaking about her experience to India on a study abroad trip. Additionally, she allegedly said indigenous people “overran this area”, a statement she claims she misspoke on.
Holt spoke during the public open hearing regarding the situation.
“First of all I would like to apologize, I have caused harm in this situation, I am very, very sorry. I used the term third world, I recognize now that [the term] was not ok, that term is not appropriate. The correct term is developing” Holt said.
Holt’s ratification was originally included in tonight’s agenda which was sent out by Legislative Council President Aaditya Pore on Wednesday. However, the majority of the council, barring one representative-at-large, voted to remove her appointment from the agenda because her application was rescinded.
This is a developing story. The Bold has reached out to members of the Executive and Legislative branches respectively for comments and planned an interview with Emma Holt at 9 a.m. Friday.
