CUPD police officer fired over racist and anti-homeless social media posts
University of Colorado Boulder Police Department (CUPD) has fired Officer Drew Matthews after an investigation regarding anti-Black and anti-homeless posts that surfaced on their Reddit and Facebook accounts.
In April, CUPD issued a statement saying, “the posts highlighted are offensive and reprehensible,” and placed Matthews on paid administrative leave after homeless advocacy group SAFE Boulder posted a thread that linked him to a Reddit account under the username of /u/BocoRam18.
Following the internal affairs investigation, CUPD Chief Doreen Jokerst confirmed in an email that Matthews has been fired, according to the Daily Camera.
“After a thorough review, Chief of Police Jokerst notified Mr. Matthews that his employment was terminated because it was determined he could not effectively continue to perform his police duties for CU Boulder,” CUPD said in a statement.
Matthews had been with the department since 2015.
This is a developing story and will be monitored and updated as more information from the university and CUPD is released.
