The Bold to announce new science and climate section at Campus Sustainability Summit

Amid growing threats posed by climate change, the student-run campus newspaper will begin ongoing environmental news coverage in August.

On Thursday, at CU Boulder’s 29th annual Campus Sustainability Summit, The Bold will unveil plans for a new science and climate section to be launched in the Fall 2022 semester.

The new section, Bold Climate Action, will be dedicated exclusively to covering science and environmental news, and will focus on offering practical solutions members of the campus community can implement to fight climate change.

After several years of record-high temperatures, rising sea levels and a surge in wildfires, experts have been sounding the alarm on climate change, with some calling it “the biggest threat modern humans have ever faced.”

Last year, CU Chancellor Philip DiStefano called on the campus community to address climate change, noting that human-generated greenhouse gasses had reached record high levels and that “the imperative to address climate change has never been greater.”

“The scientific evidence of climate change overwhelmingly demands action now to address the climate emergency,” said DiStefano in his April 21 Call to Climate Action. “This means redoubling our resolve to unleash the immense human capacity for innovation and applied solutions at sufficient speed and scale.”

DiStefano also said that CU, a “decades-long leader in campus sustainability,” is uniquely positioned to address climate change. Bold Climate Action, by virtue of its connection with CU, will cover leading researchers, new policies and environmental solutions originating right here in the campus community.

In addition to Bold Climate Action, Thursday’s Campus Sustainability Summit will showcase a variety of projects, initiatives and research on climate and the environment. The April 21 expo will run from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the UMC and is open to all students, faculty, staff and other community members.

Readers are also encouraged to stay tuned for the section’s first-ever Earth Day story package, which will run this Friday, April 22.
