Restoring and Affirming Community: An Interview with Boulder Mayor Aaron Brockett
In a December 2021 interview with The Bold, newly-inaugurated Boulder Mayor Aaron Brockett discussed his thoughts on local issues, ranging from his background, CU Boulder relations, housing and local gun policies. Brockett also discussed his thoughts on policing in Boulder, including how to improve relations between community members and the police force.
With the south Boulder King Soopers, the site of a mass shooting in March 2021, set to reopen soon—which it now has as of Feb. 9—Brockett also expressed his hopes for how the community would continue healing from that violent event.
“[That King Soopers] is where folks saw their neighbors,” Brockett said. “They get some groceries, grab a cup of coffee, and they run into an old friend and chat for a few minutes. So, we really learned what a really important community hub that was when it was closed.”
Brockett continued, “It’s been a real hole in that south Boulder community… so I know folks are really looking forward to having it open again … to have that community hub come back, and then there’ll be a really heightened emotional aspect to that.”
