Stanford defeats the undefeated Buffs
CU Women’s Basketball fell short to Stanford on Friday, Jan. 14 60-52 at the CU Events Center ending their 13 game undefeated winning streak. CU now drops 2-1 in Pac-12 play and sits at 22 in the overall ranking.
CU came out strong defensively with ten first-quarter steals, but couldn’t capitalize on the other end of the court, only scoring 11 points resulting from turnovers. The Buffs had a buffer of 15-8 heading into the second quarter, but the Cardinals came back in the second half. Colorado forced 13 first-quarter turnovers, the most turnovers forced in a quarter in school history. As the quarters progressed, CU led and trailed just points behind the Cardinals.

Head Coach JR Payne wasn’t discouraged by the outcome and said that she was proud of how the ladies played and that both teams competed at their highest level.
Some of the key players for the Buffs were Quay Miller, who scored the most points with 16, Peanut Tuitele with ten points and both Frida Formann and Mya Hollingshed each had seven points. Kindyll Wetta had three assists and Lesila Finau led the Buffs with four rebounds.
Jaylyn Sherrod, who was last week’s Pac-12 Player of the week, tied a school record for steals in a quarter with four in the first period ending with a total of five by the end of the game.
On defense, CU played strong with 15 steals compared to the Cardinals’ six who couldn’t find the bottom of the net on the offensive side.
“Tonight, shows how good we are as a defensive team,” Tuitele said. “We came out hot and we were all playing our roles. Everyone was guarding hard and knew the scout. It just shows that we can be one of the best defenses in the country.”
CU fought hard offensively and defensively, but Stanford put the pressure on in the second half. On Monday Jan. 18, the Buffs head to Oregon State to play their first conference game on the road at 3 pm M.T. This game was originally scheduled on Dec. 31, but it was rescheduled due to some Covid-19 issues.
