New CU Buffs Wide Receivers Coach Phil McGeoghan makes splashes with recruits
Seventeen Buffaloes have left for greener pastures this winter, ditching the black and gold for other schools across the country. Despite the skepticism, Colorado has stacked talent during the offseason to compete in the Pac-12 Conference in 2022.
After losing top offensive weapons such as Brenden Rice and Jarek Broussard, as well as key defensive players Mekhi Blackmon and Christian Gonzalez among others, the Buffaloes continue to look for upgrades to both their staff and roster for the fall.
With a fresh slate of coaches ready to take over the reins, including wide receiver guru Phil McGeoghan, the Buffaloes will look to attract top talent to the city of Boulder for the coming years.
On Feb. 2 CU’s new staff introduced 30 new signees on top of the 18 from 2021. Twenty-two from the high school ranks, three out of JUCOs and five from the transfer portal.
“There is a some excitement on both sides of this thing from a player perspective and from coaches.” Head Coach Karl Dorrell said in the Feb. 2 press conference. “We feel good about our efforts in recruiting the guys that I hired like I said earlier. They were hired, they signed their contracts and they went on the road and we were able to get some really good quality pieces.”
In the last month, the Buffs received official commitments from former Baylor wide receiver R.J. Sneed II and former Alabama four-star recruit Tommy Brown. The Buffaloes also received a commitment from running back Ramon Jefferson, a FCS All-American who will look to bolster CU’s backfield for the coming season. They’ll join University of Houston transfer quarterback Maddox Kopp as four additions to CU’s attack this fall.
Sneed II will be presented with the opportunity to learn under newly hired Phil McGeoghan. McGeoghan, who has eight years of coaching experience in the NFL, was coached by Karl Dorrell during his time as a player for the Denver Broncos from 2000 to 2002.
“Coach Dorrell was a very good teacher, he was very patient and knew how to develop his players through a positive and calming influence,” McGeoghan said in a press release, “I’m very excited about being reunited with coach”.
A coaching resume that has seen the likes of NFL players such as Keenan Allen and Mike Williams produce 1,000 yard seasons during his tenure with the Los Angeles Chargers, McGeoghan will look to further develop an already formidable group. A unit that includes that of Montana Lemonious-Craig and Daniel Arias, along with Sneed II, the receiver room carries the talent to have a strong collective season in the fall. McGeoghan will also look to attract some of the nation’s top high school prospects for the coming years.
Offering seven different receivers scholarships a day after being announced to the staff, including 247Sports number one overall pass-catcher Carnell Tate, the seasoned wide receivers coach is quickly looking to build one of the top receiver rooms in the nation.
“We’re not going to back down to anybody in recruiting the wide receiver position. I can tell you that right now. If you’re a top talent at wide receiver… I’m going to be on you to come here.” McGeoghan said during Wednesday’s introductory press conference.
While the search to bolster the Buffs roster through recruiting seems to be high priority for McGeoghan and the rest of the coaching staff, the university’s recent moves in the transfer portal will attempt to make up for the multiple players who have found their way out of Boulder throughout the past few months.
Sneed II, a graduate transfer who saw major success during his time at Baylor, will give the Buffs much needed depth after the losses of a plethora of receivers during the portal period.
Sneed II racked up more than 1,500 yards during his time at Baylor and led the team in receptions, receiving yards and yards per game in 2020, earning him Big-12 honors. With most of CU’s production from the 2021 season having found new places to call home, Sneed will find himself being one of the more experienced offensive weapons on the team.

At 6-foot-7 and weighing in at 320 pounds, redshirt senior Tommy Brown might just be exactly what the Buffaloes need in the trenches. The former Mater Dei High School star and four star recruit will immediately give the Buffaloes much needed depth after losing a pair of lineman to the transfer portal, Chance Lytle and Kanan Ray. Seeing a total of 227 total snaps on offense during his three years in Tuscaloosa, Brown will look to secure a bigger role for the Buffs this upcoming season.
