Law enforcement confirm 10 slain in south Boulder.
At 2:49 p.m. on Monday, March 22, Boulder Police Department confirmed an active shooter situation at the King Soopers located at 3600 Table Mesa Drive. The grocery store is about two miles south of the University of Colorado Boulder campus.
Cmdr. Kerry Yamaguchi of BPD addressed the public, media and community around 6:50 p.m. According to Yamaguchi, there is no current threat to the public. There is one person of interest in custody, and is being treated for injuries at a hospital.
According to Chief Maris Herold, there were 10 fatalities, including BPD Officer Eric Talley. Talley was 51-years-old and served with BPD since 2010.
Police and coroner will not release names of other victims until families have been notified, said Herold. She explains families are waiting in anguish to hear about loved ones: “I am sensitive to that, and we will work around the clock to get this accomplished.”
A Timeline of What We Know
Law enforcement advised people to “AVOID THE AREA,” at 2:49 p.m.
At 3:29 p.m., a man was escorted out of King Soopers in handcuffs and in police custody. He was seen shirtless, shoeless and dressed in only boxers with a bloodied leg. It is unknown if he is the suspect.
For two hours, police presence increased at Table Mesa. This presence included JeffCo, Westminster and Denver Police Department, along with SWAT and FBI.
The next emergency notification was not received until 5:10 p.m. The BPD emergency notification asked people near 17th and Grove St. to shelter in place while they responded to a report of an armed, dangerous individual. Yamaguchi believes the 17th St. incident is not related, according to his statement at the BPD press conference.
Yamaguchi said a suspect is in custody and being treated for injuries at a hospital. It is unknown if there was a motive, including any relation between the gunman and victim(s).
CUPD helped family members connect with unaccounted for relatives and loved-ones by using the Buff Bus to transport people who were inside of King Soopers from the crime scene to the CU Events Center.
“There are no words to describe the pain my community is experiencing tonight,” tweeted Congressman Joe Neguse. “I am heartbroken and praying for the families of those we’ve lost.” Neguse released a full statement. Many Colorado residents continue to express their anguish on social media, while the shooting draws national news attention.
“Obviously this is a very complex investigation that will take no less than five days to complete,” said Herold.
“We are going to ensure justice is done,” said Michael Dougherty, Boulder District Attorney, at the first press conference. Doughtery explained they are in the early stages of investigation.
