What You Need to Know for the 2020 General Election: Important Dates and Deadlines
Sept. 22 is National Voter Registration Day. Whether you are voting in Colorado or your home state, learn more about registration, mail-in ballots and voting in-person.
Registration for in-state and out-of-state students
- In-state students: Register to vote or confirm your registration. Colorado automatically mails ballots to voters, but check that your mailing address is up to date.
- Out-of-state students: You can request an *absentee ballot from your home state or register to vote in Boulder County. Select your state here for voter registration deadlines.
- Students living on campus: According to CU Boulder Today, there is a specific way you must list your on-campus address in your voter registration to receive your ballot. Whether you’re voting in Colorado or via absentee ballot from your home state, visit Boulder County’s Student Voting Guidelines page for instructions.
*What is an absentee ballot?
An absentee ballot is a ballot completed and typically mailed in advance of an election by a voter who is unable to be present at the polls.
Colorado Voter Registration Deadlines:
- Online: The deadline to register online to vote is Monday, Oct. 26, 2020. If you miss this deadline, you will not receive a ballot by mail, but you can still vote in-person at a voter service and polling center.
- In-person: The deadline to register to vote in person is 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 3, 2020. If you’re in line by 7 p.m., you can still cast a vote.

In-person voting
Starting Oct. 19, drop boxes and polling centers open. On campus, you can visit the UMC Vote Center to register, vote in person or call ahead to order your ballot to-go.
- Voter ID laws: At the polls, you must show a government-issued ID or an identifying document. The identifying documents can include a bank statement, utility bill or vehicle registration.
